There I Ruined It: A Metaironic Post-Postmodern Homage (please help me there must be other ways to live)
One of the defining features of our current moment is the sense of being trapped in a failed social project that has no future and cannot be changed. Generally, people are locked in a tension of anxiety about hyper-speed social changes and a simultaneous experience of hopeless stagnation. Neoliberalism, financial capitalism, digital technology, and postmodern social analysis have successfully deconstructed the world we thought we lived in, and we stand staring blankly at a pile of bricks that we used to think was our house.
This piece is an homage to Josef Albers’ series “Homage to the Square”. Albers was engaging in a classic modernist project, encompassing both a pragmatic exploration of color theory, and an almost spiritual exploration of material – the power of simple relationships in the most minimal of elements to stir the soul. His series was one of the first pieces of art I was deeply moved by.
